French

?If we spoke a different language, we would perceive a somewhat different world.?
Ludwig Wittgenstein

At Eaton Square School, French is introduced at the age of four years and lessons continue throughout their time at the school.

The aim is to help them discover the enjoyment of another language through games and songs, develop their knowledge of another culture; and encourage at an early age without reservation to speak a foreign language.

From Transition up to Year Two, the school provides an introduction to French using a global method. This consists of learning vocabulary and language patterns through active individual participation in songs, action songs, finger rhymes, story telling, drawing, colouring and acting. Learning activities used involve all senses.

From Year Three the children start developing their reading skills and they start learning French grammar and cultural facts.

During Year Seven and Eight pupils will commence the Common Entrance Syllabus. In Year 7 all children continue to study French, taking five lessons a week. The four skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking continue to be practised regularly so that all these language skills develop further as the year progresses. Tasks become longer and more complex. The cultural background continues to be an important element of the course and is explored whenever the opportunity arises. It will provide a basis for continuing study of the language and encourage independent learning.

Pupils from Years 3 to 8 are given one set of homework a week.

Assessment is an ongoing process during lessons, as teachers assess pupils? knowledge, understanding and skills from their oral answers to questions as well as their written work. Formal oral or written assessment exams are set twice a term for Year Four to Year Eight.

The children are given the opportunity to practise the language during various trips to France from Year Four to Year Seven, including a ski trip to La Clusaz, France where pupils practise speaking the language and also have daily French lessons. There is a Paris trip for Pupils in Year Six. Pupils in Year Seven visit a Chateaux in Sauveterre, France for half a term of intensive French tuition.
